Ministry of Health Research: Smoking Initiation Age Dropped to 17
A study by the Ministry of Health revealed that the average age of starting smoking is 17, and 73 percent of the 13-15 age group can buy cigarettes from markets.
According to a smoking usage survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, the average age of starting smoking in Turkey was determined to be 17. The research also found that 73 percent of children between the ages of 13-15 can obtain cigarettes from markets.
According to the research data, 90 percent of the society supports digital electronic age verification for tobacco purchases, while 92 percent approve of banning individuals under the age of 18 from entering areas where tobacco is used. In line with information obtained from AK Party sources, a new legal regulation is expected to be submitted to Parliament in light of these results.
Within the scope of the newly prepared regulation, it is aimed to restrict the access of individuals under the age of 18 to tobacco products. It is planned to maintain the existing obligation to show identification and to increase inspections in tobacconists and crowded businesses. In addition, the ratio of smoking areas in restaurants and cafes to the total business size will be clarified in the legislative proposal, and smoking will not be allowed even in outdoor areas outside of these zones.
