New York Governor Kathy Hochul has approved new laws aimed at protecting children from unsafe artificial intelligence chatbot features and introducing strict security requirements for internet-connected baby monitors sold in the state.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has enacted two new laws aimed at enhancing children's safety. The measures are designed to prevent companies from offering children chatbots that may encourage self-harm or create unhealthy emotional dependence, and to increase the security of baby monitors against cyber attacks.

The law numbered S.9508/A.5175A mandates that internet-connected baby monitors sold in New York include security features and a clear warning label to prevent unauthorized individuals from viewing or listening. The second law, S.9051B/A.10379C, prohibits companies utilizing artificial intelligence chatbots from offering minors unsafe features that imitate humans, create emotional dependence, encourage self-harm, or contain sexually explicit conversations.
