Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado returns to Venezuela from exile
Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has returned to Venezuela after months in exile. As uncertainties regarding the country's democratic future persist, the extension of interim president Delcy Rodriguez's term is sparking controversy.
Nobel-laureate opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has appeared in public in Venezuela for the first time since December. Machado's return coincides with a period where the legitimacy of the interim administration, established following the removal of Nicolas Maduro by U.S. military intervention in January, is being questioned.
Machado announced her entry into the country via social media with the statement, "I am here. With you." Edmundo Gonzalez, a prominent figure in the opposition, also confirmed Machado's arrival on the X platform, stating that he would be by her side shortly. On Sunday, Machado met with her supporters at a church in the Lara state, located in western Caracas.
Interim president Delcy Rodriguez, who took over the administration following Maduro's removal, was initially appointed to serve for 90 days. However, despite Rodriguez exceeding her term, an election calendar has not yet been determined. While Machado and her allies are demanding an election date, U.S. officials emphasize that the priority is economic stability.
