Pera Museum opens 2026-2027 season with £100 million worth of exhibitions
Pera Museum has begun its new season with the exhibitions 'Creation and Destruction', featuring works by Frank Bowling, Francis Bacon, and Victor Willing, and 'Behind the Scenes of the Republic'. Museum management highlighted the increasing costs and economic risks of bringing international artworks to Istanbul.
Pera Museum has opened its 2026-2027 season with the exhibition "Creation and Destruction," which hosts significant names of British art, and "Behind the Scenes of the Republic," which focuses on the Republican era. The museum's founding general manager, Özalp Birol, announced that the total value of the exhibited works exceeds £100 million.
It was stated that each of the works signed by Francis Bacon in the exhibition is worth approximately £20 million. Özalp Birol stated that transporting international-scale artworks to Istanbul poses a serious economic risk due to the increase in shipping and insurance costs. It was noted that this situation makes the process of finding sponsors more difficult.
Museum activities are carried out with the support of İpek Kıraç, who continues the cultural and artistic legacy of Suna and İnan Kıraç. It was emphasized that methods such as donating works to the foundation stand out as an exemplary approach against the economic challenges faced by private museums.
