Politician Under Investigation in Romania Moved to House Arrest
A Romanian court has ruled that former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, who is under investigation for suspected fraud, should be moved from police custody to house arrest for thirty days.
A Romanian court has decided that Calin Georgescu, who was held under police custody as part of a criminal investigation into suspected fraud, will be transferred to house arrest for a period of thirty days.
Fraud Investigation and Ruling
In a ruling issued on Tuesday, a Romanian court decided to transfer former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu from police custody to house arrest. This thirty-day measure was implemented as part of the ongoing fraud investigation against him.
Prosecutors allege that Georgescu and two other suspects deceived a Romanian businessman by convincing him that they could secure a loan from a foreign financial institution.
Charges and Supporter Reactions
Denying the allegations against him, Calin Georgescu had previously challenged a September court ruling. The parties have the right to appeal Tuesday's house arrest decision.
While hundreds of supporters opposing the trial process staged street demonstrations, far-right party leader George Simion stated that this decision showed the protests were making their voices heard.
Past Political Developments
Calin Georgescu was among the leading figures in the first round of the canceled 2024 presidential election. Known for his criticisms of NATO, Brussels, and Ukraine policies, the politician has faced various lawsuits following the election.
Georgescu, who is also being tried in two separate cases on charges of attempting to undermine national security and praising fascist leaders, has denied all of these allegations.
