Pope Leo to Meet With Abuse Survivors During South America Visit
Pope Leo, who is recovering from lung cancer surgery, will meet with victims of church-related sexual abuse during his South America tour scheduled for November 6-17.
According to a statement from the Vatican, 71-year-old Pope Leo will meet with individuals who have suffered sexual abuse by clergy members during his South America trip covering Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru between November 6 and 17, 2026.
Pope Leo, who has received medical clearance to travel, is preparing for one of his most intensive foreign trips in recent years. The Vatican stated that these meetings reflect the Pope's desire to express his closeness to those suffering due to abuse.
The Pope, who held a similar meeting during his visit to France, had previously emphasized his commitment to the protection of children and the eradication of abuse. Leo, who was born in the U.S., served for many years as a missionary and bishop in Peru before being elected Pope.
