Republican Figures React to Donald Trump's Ukraine and Russia Policy
Some Republican politicians have reacted to US President Donald Trump's Russia policy, the lifting of sanctions, and the diesel agreement made with Moscow.
US President Donald Trump's softening stance toward Russia has faced fierce backlash from some members of his own party. Politicians, led by outgoing Nebraska Representative Don Bacon, criticized the handling of the Ukraine war and threatened to block the administration's budget and financial support priorities.
US President Donald Trump lifted sanctions against Russia last week, which had been named after his long-time ally, the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Instead, Trump announced an agreement with Moscow to import diesel fuel, criticizing Ukraine's attacks on Russia and how the situation drives up fuel prices for Americans. Trump argued that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy does not want to end the war and suggested that someone else should come forward for the next negotiations. In an interview with Bloomberg, Zelenskyy stated that Trump was trying to coerce Ukraine into yielding to Russia's demands.
Figures from within the party, including Don Bacon, Darline Graham, Bill Cassidy, and Mitt Romney, opposed Trump's steps. Pennsylvania Representative Brian Fitzpatrick stated that the administration had not provided sufficient explanations regarding restrictions on the Starshield satellite internet service, the diesel agreement, and the lifting of sanctions, warning that they would hold the administration accountable through the budget. Don Bacon noted that in the face of this stance, which is inconsistent with the nation's interests, he would not support Trump's spending priorities, such as a triumphal arch or a new White House ballroom.
