Amid increasing military mobility and conflicts between Ethiopia and Eritrea in East Africa, the US Embassy has warned its citizens against potential long-range attacks.

Embassy Warning on Long-Range Attacks

The US Embassy in Addis Ababa issued a security alert for American citizens, stating that reports had been received in October regarding potential long-range attacks that could target military facilities in Ethiopia.

Explosions and Drone Attacks in the Capital

In early October, explosions linked to drone attacks occurred near military facilities in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.

A coalition of rebel groups operating against the government claimed responsibility for these drone attacks in the capital.

Regional Conflicts and the End of the Ceasefire

In early October, a four-year ceasefire came to an end as Ethiopian troops pushed out rebel groups that had seized Tigray's capital, Mekelle.

Additionally, while Eritrean troops allegedly entered Ethiopia, the Addis Ababa administration launched drone attacks to drive these forces out across the border.

Red Sea Ports and Regional Alliances

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's statements and goals regarding gaining access to Red Sea ports were among the triggers for the recent clashes.

As regional tensions escalate, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Somali have formed coalitions amid disagreements over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Red Sea initiatives.

Diplomatic Initiatives and Calls

The US Department of State has made diplomatic calls to both Ethiopian and Eritrean parties to exercise restraint, respect sovereignty, and return to the negotiating table.
