Russian Official Protested at IMFC Meeting as Global Economy Shows Resilience
While the IMFC meeting in Bangkok emphasized the resilience of the global economy, about half of the delegates walked out during the speech by Russia's finance minister.
Mohammed al-Jadaan, Chair of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), stated that the global economy has shown resilience despite wars and artificial intelligence risks, while approximately half of the delegates walked out in protest during the speech by Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov at the meeting in Bangkok.
Saudi Arabia's Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan, who chairs the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) steering committee, stated at the meeting held in Bangkok that the global economy has displayed remarkable resilience despite wars, threats to energy and food security, high public debt, and risks stemming from artificial intelligence.
However, al-Jadaan emphasized that this picture leaves no room for complacency. During the meeting, divisions caused by Russia's war in Ukraine resulted in a tangible protest during Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov's speech, with roughly 50 percent of the delegates walking out of the hall.
Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel also confirmed this protest action involving approximately 50 percent of the delegates. Al-Jadaan noted that, despite the protests, it was significant that members were ultimately able to reach a consensus on the chairmanship statement.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva described the meetings as productive while drawing attention to the increasing divergence and concerns among member countries.
