Tensions Between U.S. and Ukrainian Leaders Put Kyiv's Support at Risk
Political tension between U.S. and Ukrainian leaders deepens as Washington eases sanctions on Russia, putting Kyiv's support in jeopardy.
Relations between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have become strained due to the Washington administration's easing of sanctions against Russia and disagreements over energy policies.
Ties between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faced a difficult week due to U.S. threats to cut intelligence support, the lifting of tariffs on Russian exports, and a diesel agreement noted as potentially financing Russia's war. Trump criticized Zelenskyy, stating that Ukraine's attacks on Russian refineries led to high energy costs. Meanwhile, concerns that satellite internet services could be cut off heightened fears that Ukraine might remain vulnerable to new winter attacks on its energy infrastructure.
Zelenskiy took a firm stance against Trump's criticisms, implying that the U.S. was favoring Russia and declaring that they would continue to hit energy targets as long as Russian attacks persisted. Another development that escalated this tension was Trump's removal of certain Russia sanctions and tariffs that were expected to take effect. Zelenskiy stated in social media posts that this step would embolden Russia.
This impasse has heightened concerns that Trump might restrict arms shipments to Ukraine or strike new economic deals with Moscow. Despite all this tension, according to two unnamed Ukrainian officials, the Kyiv administration wants to continue dialogue with Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Denys Sienik, the charge d'affaires at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, thanked Trump for his efforts to bring the war to an end while expressing readiness for negotiations with Russia. Trump, meanwhile, stated that he would continue to speak with both leaders and that he wanted the war to end.
