US President Donald Trump suspended a large package of sanctions against Russia passed by Congress, just two days before they were due to take effect and amid deepening disagreements with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It was announced that some of the sanctions enacted in September were suspended in accordance with national interests.

Publishing a decree stating that suspending some of the sanctions enacted in September served national interests, Donald Trump drew the ire of US lawmakers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was unfortunate that the US had decided to completely disregard the sanctions.

Meanwhile, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev described the decision as a historic moment. Following the decision, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a 60-day pause to analyze the global economic impacts of the move.
