Using thousands of AI agents to uncover new leads in biological data

Developed through a collaboration between OpenAI, PerturbAI, and Scripps Research, thousands of GPT-Rosalind-powered AI agents analyzed complex data belonging to millions of mouse brain cells in just 32 minutes, revealing new clues for disease treatments.

Modern biological experiments produce datasets too vast for scientists to examine alone. Although researchers can measure the changes of thousands of genes and their effects on cells, establishing how these results connect to human diseases requires years of literature review. A newly developed 'distributed biological reasoning' method deploys thousands of AI agents to accelerate this process.

GPT-Rosalind-based agents examined the entire brain CRISPR atlas to analyze the effects of gene disruptions on cell types. Each agent tackled a specific gene disruption, matched it with scientific literature, and provided explanations for the results. This process allowed an analysis that would normally take months to be completed in a very short time.

The findings offer new clues regarding the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The agents identified that two disease-linked genes affect brain cells in different ways and found a potential link between cholesterol regulation and neurodegeneration. This data creates a critical roadmap for the development of future treatment methods.
