UN official warns on artificial intelligence: Global inequality could deepen
Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, warned that barriers to accessing artificial intelligence technologies could further widen the economic gap between developing and developed countries.
Speaking in Qatar's capital Doha, Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) operating within the United Nations, stated that artificial intelligence carries the risk of deepening social and economic inequalities on a global scale.
ITU Deputy Secretary-General Lamanauskas emphasized that developing countries face serious obstacles in benefiting from the artificial intelligence revolution. It was stated that this situation could increase inequality of opportunity between countries that possess technological capabilities and those that do not.
Assessment: The statements reflect concerns that structural barriers to technology access could create long-term negative impacts on global development goals.
