Union-focused health insurance controversy at Çekmeköy District National Education Directorate
It was alleged that the Çekmeköy District National Education Directorate in Istanbul made a discounted private health insurance agreement exclusively for Eğitim Bir-Sen members. Eğitim Sen reacted to the directorate becoming an instrument of union propaganda.
It was claimed that the Çekmeköy District National Education Directorate in Istanbul made a complementary private health insurance agreement for Eğitim Bir-Sen members and that posters sent to teachers offered a 20 percent discount to 'contracted unions'.
Çayan Çalık, Legal Secretary of Eğitim Sen Istanbul Branch No. 2, reacted harshly to the practice in question. Çalık stated that unions defending the public right to health find such structures unacceptable, as they direct workers toward individual health insurance and provide services to a specific union.
Çalık argued that the District National Education Directorate conducting propaganda for a specific union is incompatible with the principle of institutional neutrality, and called on education workers to sever ties with such unions.
