University of Michigan Establishes Principles for Artificial Intelligence in Education
Following a comprehensive campus engagement process, the University of Michigan has officially approved six guiding principles for the use of artificial intelligence in education, research, and operations.
The University of Michigan has finalized six guiding principles for addressing artificial intelligence in education, teaching, research, and operational processes. The new principles aim to establish a shared foundation rather than creating a new policy.
The University of Michigan has clarified six core principles following a campus-wide process regarding the use of artificial intelligence in education. According to a report in the University Record, these principles offer a common ground for evaluating the use of AI in teaching, learning, research, and operations, rather than serving as a new set of rules.
The process began with a report from the AI Education Working Group, which examined AI and pedagogy research as well as faculty surveys. The final text was created by incorporating feedback from students, staff, and faculty on a draft published in September.
The six principles established by the university administration include advocating for human-centered AI, supporting the institutional mission, fostering critical thinking and AI literacy, centering ethics and transparency, and protecting data privacy.
