Op. Dr. Hilal Bulut Aydemir, Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist at Liv Hospital Samsun, drew attention in a statement made for October 18 Menopause Day that the risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases may increase due to the decrease in the hormone estrogen during the menopause period, emphasizing the importance of regular health check-ups, a balanced diet, and exercise.

Menopause, which women generally experience between the ages of 45 and 55, signifies the permanent cessation of the menstrual cycle due to the decline in ovarian functions. Diagnosed by the absence of menstruation for 12 months without any other underlying cause, this process can be accompanied by hot flashes, night sweats, sleep irregularities, and mood swings.

While the drop in estrogen levels accelerates the loss in bone density and increases the risk of osteoporosis, metabolic and lifestyle factors can complicate weight control and cardiovascular health monitoring. Experts state that the consumption of calcium, vitamin D, adequate protein, along with regular walks and muscle-strengthening exercises, can improve the quality of life during this period.
