As critical votes approach in the government formation process of the AfD, which emerged victorious in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the seat distribution in the state parliament and the stances of the parties remain at the center of political debates.

State Parliament Presidency Elections

One month after the elections in Saxony-Anhalt where the AfD came first, the first critical vote of its march to power will take place on October 6 in the state parliament presidency elections.

Falling short of a single-party majority with thirty-nine deputies, the AfD aims to secure the state parliament presidency with the support of the BSW.

Parliamentary Arithmetic

In the eighty-three-member parliament, parties other than the AfD still hold a majority with forty-four seats, and the overall picture is being debated.

AfD state leader Ulrich Siegmund publicly announced that he will run for prime minister in December and aims to be elected in the first round.

Parties' Stances and the BSW

Although the five-deputy BSW is portrayed as a pivot party, the five parties excluding the AfD hold a total of forty-four seats.

While stating that it will not form a coalition with the AfD, the BSW announced that it will support the parliamentary speaker candidate and remain abstaining in the prime ministerial election.

Constitutional Process and Options

According to the Constitution of Saxony-Anhalt, an absolute majority of forty-two votes is required in the first two rounds of the prime ministerial election.

If no result is achieved in the second round, the parliament may go to early elections or the election can be held with a simple majority in the third round.
