AI Scam in Northern Ireland: One Person Loses £250,000
Scammers using an AI-generated deepfake video of a well-known financial figure have caused a victim to be defrauded of a large sum of money.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland announced that a victim lost £250,000 as a result of an investment scam involving an AI-generated fake video of a famous financial personality.
AI-Powered Deepfake Video
The victim saw an AI-generated video featuring a well-known figure from the financial sector promoting a high-return investment opportunity.
Although the Police Service of Northern Ireland did not verify the identity of the celebrity, it was noted that financial experts like Martin Lewis, Peter Jones, and Steven Bartlett have been used in similar online scams.
Stages of the Fraud
Having initially invested a small amount, the victim was later contacted via WhatsApp and encouraged to make additional payments.
The scammers had the victim create multiple online accounts and grant remote access to their computer.
Borrowing and Money Transfers
The criminals also persuaded the victim to borrow money to continue with the investment.
The collected funds were transferred to various accounts under the control of the criminals.
Warnings from Authorities
Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Gibson, head of the Fraud Squad, urged the public to stop and verify financial activities.
It was emphasized that it should be independently verified whether financial service providers are authorized by the Financial Conduct Authority.
