AI Songs Have Become Russia's New Propaganda Tool in the Ukraine War
Hundreds of AI-generated songs praising Russia's war in Ukraine have been detected on popular platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music.
It has been reported that AI-generated songs have begun to be used in Russia's propaganda against Ukraine. These works, which have been listened to millions of times on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music, aim to legitimize the war.
AI-Powered Propaganda Songs
Russia has started using AI-generated songs to strengthen its propaganda in the Ukraine war. Prepared in various styles ranging from emotional ballads to thrash metal, these works find a place on major music platforms worldwide.
Spread on Music Platforms
According to a report by The New York Times, hundreds of AI songs have appeared on popular streaming platforms such as Spotify, YouTube Music, and Apple Music. According to a research report published by the NGO Terrecon, these songs have been streamed millions of times.
Content and Themes of the Songs
In these songs, Russian soldiers are praised, while the war launched by Vladimir Putin is portrayed as a necessary defense. Some tracks also contain ethnic slurs aimed at dehumanizing Ukrainians and descriptions comparing frontlines to hell.
Findings of the Terrecon Research
The Terrecon report identified 981 pro-Russian war propaganda songs published after 2024, when AI tools like Suno and Udio predominantly took over the market. Despite limited listening data, a YouTube video produced with Suno was seen to have reached millions of views.
The Role of the Russian Government
It is not fully known to what extent the Russian government supports the accessibility of these songs on the internet. However, the Moscow administration has played significant roles in the promotion of war-related cultural content in the past, and the Institute for Internet Development has supported hundreds of artistic projects related to the war.
Platforms' Moderation Challenges
It is stated that streaming platforms struggle to keep up with the increase in AI content. While Spotify implements an AI labeling policy, it is noted that moderation systems mostly respond to specific banned words rather than overall meaning.
