Eskişehir-Bilecik Medical Chamber President Dr. Nazan Aksaray argued that healthcare services have become commercialized, stating that the current system is failing to meet the needs of the public.
Eskişehir-Bilecik Medical Chamber President Dr. Nazan Aksaray harshly criticized the current functioning of the healthcare system in Turkey during a forum she attended. Aksaray emphasized that health has been stripped of its status as a fundamental human right and transformed into a commercial commodity, a situation that negatively impacts both public health and the labor of healthcare workers.
Emphasis on commercialization in healthcare
Dr. Nazan Aksaray stated that the healthcare system has been surrendered to the profit greed of capital, arguing that the service has lost its public nature. Noting that the labor of healthcare workers is being devalued, Aksaray expressed that the current structure of the system is unsustainable.
Current health issues and access barriers
In her speech, Aksaray addressed chronic problems such as appointment scheduling, bed capacity, and the supply of medicines and vaccines, drawing attention to the increase in measles cases, particularly among children. She stated that the structural problems created by city hospitals make access to healthcare services more difficult.
Social health and inequality
Reminding that health is not only a state of physical but also mental and social well-being, Aksaray emphasized that poverty and social inequality are the fundamental factors that make people sick. She stated that for a fair society, healthcare services must be restructured on an egalitarian basis.
Call for public-oriented healthcare
Stating that as physicians they advocate for a public and public-oriented healthcare model, Aksaray said that a joint struggle is essential for a democratic and fair society. She underscored that healthcare services must be accessible to everyone.
