AI-Supported Symptom Assessment Contributes to Choosing the Right Healthcare Service
Cotte and colleagues found that the AI-based Ada Health platform reduces patient uncertainty and optimizes the utilization of healthcare resources.
A comprehensive study examining the effects of AI-supported symptom self-assessment platforms on patients' decisions in seeking healthcare providers has been published.
Scope and Methodology of the Research
In the study conducted by Cotte and colleagues, the effects of the Ada Health platform, an AI-powered diagnostic decision support system, on patient behaviors were evaluated. The research was carried out as a prospective cohort study with the participation of 1,470 adult patients from Portugal's largest private healthcare network.
Changes in Patient Uncertainty
Within the scope of the study, adult patients reported their intentions to seek healthcare before and after the symptom self-assessment. Based on the findings obtained, it was determined that the patient uncertainty rate dropped from 12.6 percent to 5.0 percent.
Utilization of Healthcare Resources
The research results showed that 33.0 percent of the participants changed their care plans following the self-assessment. Following the self-assessment, primary care consultations increased from 16.3 percent to 42.1 percent.
Increase in Appropriate Care Rates
When examining non-emergency patients, it was observed that the appropriate level of care increased from 29.8 percent in initial plans to 64.4 percent in observed actions. This demonstrated that AI-supported systems contribute to resource optimization.
