The city of Altamonte Springs is considering an upgrade to a pilot program that uses artificial intelligence to make streets smoother and safer.
The city implemented Road Triage technology from the firm Robocist in 2025 as a more efficient and cost-effective method to detect road problems such as cracks and potholes.
Cost Advantage and Data Collection
City Manager Frank Martz stated that the technology allows for more data collection and enables the identification of erosion or subsidence before potholes form.
The system's cost advantage stands out; while manually inspecting 80 miles of road previously cost approximately $120,000, vehicle-mounted sensors collected the same data for $3,500.
Post-Storm Processes and New Goals
The system can also evaluate road conditions before and after storms to support a faster recovery process.
Following the expiration of the pilot program, the city plans to expand the scope of artificial intelligence not only to detect issues but also to automatically initiate work orders and provide additional savings.
