By combining artificial intelligence, acoustic techniques, and neuroscience, researchers examined two 5th-century BC Etruscan painted tombs in Italy and determined that these structures were designed to provide advanced sensory experiences for the living.

Sound and Architecture in Etruscan Tombs

Ancient Etruscan society integrated sound with architecture in a culturally significant way. The painted tombs located in towns such as Tarquinia, Chiusi, and Orvieto stand out with scenes of music, banquets, and the afterlife.

Artificial Intelligence and Acoustic Research

Utilizing the Voices of Silence project led by the University of Oxford and Duke University's Neuroartifact project, researchers combined artificial intelligence with acoustic methods in this study.

Examined Historical Structures

The new techniques were applied to two Etruscan painted tombs dating to the 5th century BC, named Tomba dei Demoni Azzurri (Tomb of the Blue Demons) and Tomba del Gallo (Tomb of the Rooster).

Sensory and Theatrical Experiences

The findings show that the tombs were designed not only to house the dead but also to influence the senses of the living through long echoes, torchlight, incense, and the aromas of wine.

Metaphysical and Transitional Spaces

While the Tomb of the Blue Demons induces perceptual disorientation, the Tomb of the Rooster focuses visual attention; this reimagines the tombs as theatrical and transitional spaces.
