The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office Consolidated Communications Center has launched a new artificial intelligence system named Ava to maintain focus on critical emergencies and optimize operations.

New Artificial Intelligence System

The artificial intelligence platform named Ava, developed by Aurelian, has begun actively managing routine and non-emergency calls. This system aims to enable human dispatchers to focus on radio traffic and emergency 911 situations.

Natural Communication Method

Citizens who do not call the emergency line are encouraged to speak naturally with Ava instead of using traditional touch-tone telephone menus. Callers simply state the reason for their call directly rather than dialing specific departments.

Employment and Capacity Increase

Sheriff Knowles emphasized that this transition process will not lead to any layoffs and will not reduce the quality of public safety services. The primary purpose of the technology is to build capacity to manage high call volumes.

Density Management and Statistics

The center, which serves seven police departments, seven fire departments, and the Sheriff's Office, processed 113,538 non-emergency calls and 17,612 emergency 911 calls in 2025. The increasing volume of emergency calls made workload management tools necessary.

Emergency Transfer and Language Support

Ava is equipped to transfer callers directly to 911 if it detects an emergency during the interaction. Having undergone comprehensive training, the platform also possesses full Spanish language proficiency.
