Artificial Intelligence Protest Held Ahead of G20 Innovation Meeting at the University of North Carolina
Hundreds of people gathered in front of the hotel hosting the AI-focused G20 Innovation Ministerial Conference to protest the industry and the lack of regulation.
During the G20 Innovation Ministerial Conference held at the Carolina Inn on the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus, hundreds of students and county residents took to the streets to protest artificial intelligence and tech leaders.
G20 Innovation Conference and Attendees
Tech leaders from around the world gathered at the Carolina Inn for the second and final day of the AI-focused conference. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman attended the meeting, while Tesla CEO Elon Musk joined the event virtually.
Motivations for the Protest and Supporters
Activists stated that they aimed to remind tech billionaires and university administrators of community concerns regarding the future of artificial intelligence. The protest was supported by various student and civil society organizations, notably the Sunrise Movement.
March and Demonstration Details
Demonstrators marched from the Old Well area to the Carolina Inn, chanting slogans and making noise with pots, pans, kazoos, and rubber chickens. Alongside their anti-AI stance, some participants carried signs criticizing Flock cameras and administrative policies.
Security Measures and University Stance
University administration stated that the institution has no official connection to or sponsorship of the G20 ministerial conference. Police teams took precautions on the streets and set up barriers in front of the hotel, and the demonstration ended without incident.
