FAA launches AI system to predict flight delays before takeoff

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford announced SMART, a new artificial intelligence system developed to regulate air traffic and prevent delays.

Introduction and Purpose of the System

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford introduced a new artificial intelligence system aimed at reducing flight delays before they begin. This development is considered the start of a more proactive era in aviation management.

Working Principle of the SMART System

Standing for Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories, SMART consolidates approximately two hundred data streams—including airline schedules, weather forecasts, and flight paths—into a single center. The artificial intelligence-powered engine highlights potential restrictions in advance, allowing experts to propose route changes.

Rollout Plan and Control Mechanism

The system initially began operating on a limited basis in the Washington D.C. airspace and is planned to roll out gradually to other regions of the country. All recommendations generated by the system will be reviewed by FAA personnel, and local control leaders will have the ability to accept or reject the suggestions.
