Four French nationals who identified a luxury-filled home in Canberra using artificial intelligence and social media posts were captured in Sydney following their robbery.
Four French nationals who broke into a luxury residence in Canberra and stole valuable jewelry and watches have confessed to their crimes. According to court documents, one of the suspects used artificial intelligence tools to analyze details in social media photos to determine the home's location.
Target identification with artificial intelligence
Ilyes Abdelkader used artificial intelligence technology to analyze photos shared on the victim's Instagram account. Using details in the photos such as a cherry blossom tree and the Black Mountain tower, the suspect utilized ChatGPT to scan areas in Canberra with homes featuring pools and tennis courts to locate the target.
Robbery and arrest process
The four-person group, arriving in Sydney via Thailand, broke into the home in Canberra in October and stole valuable items. The suspects, who gained entry by breaking a window with tree trunks, were captured at a fast-food restaurant in Sydney shortly after mailing some of the stolen items to France.
Court and valuation dispute
In the trial held at the ACT Supreme Court, the total value of the stolen items was reduced from over $10 million to under $2 million. The prosecution stated that the victims could not prove the authenticity of certain luxury items because they were unable to provide receipts or certificates of authenticity.
Recovered and missing items
Police teams recovered some of the stolen items at a rental property in Sydney. However, the fate of many items with a total value exceeding $1 million remains uncertain, including a Richard Mille watch claimed to be worth $5 million.
