REDCap, a research data management platform used by thousands of institutions worldwide, has announced the integration of its first human-supervised generative artificial intelligence tools.
New AI-Powered Tools
REDCap, a research data management platform developed by Vanderbilt Health, has integrated its first human-supervised generative AI tools. Details of this newly developed system were published in the journal JAMIA Open.
Innovations added to the system include a writing assistant for texts such as survey invitations, a summarization tool for open-ended responses, and a translation tool enabling forms to be used in different languages.
Human Oversight and Security Measures
The team opted for low-risk researcher assistant tasks where AI outputs are not directly accepted, but rather reviewed and approved by a human. Core research data is never altered during this process.
The AI features are turned off by default and can only be enabled by institutional administrators by connecting to secure AI services.
Global Usage and Adoption Rates
Introduced to the global REDCap Consortium in January 2025, these features were activated by 18 institutions worldwide over the subsequent seven months.
Looking at usage rates, eight institutions reported continuous use across 1,171 projects, while within VUMC alone, at least one AI tool was utilized in 958 projects.
