The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has conducted a comprehensive data collection study for the first time since the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence.
More than 760,000 15-year-old students from 91 countries worldwide were tested in science, mathematics, and reading.
Usage Habits and Academic Success
After accounting for socioeconomic status, it was determined that students who do not use AI perform better in science than those who use artificial intelligence.
While those using AI for specific tasks such as text summarization or draft writing achieved poorer results, the decline was smaller among those conducting preliminary research.
Frequency of Use and Positive Results
Students who use artificial intelligence once or twice a year or every day exhibited the lowest performance, whereas monthly or weekly users achieved better results.
Students who used AI weekly for general learning purposes and received training in evaluating the quality of the tools outperformed those who never used them.
Evaluations by Education Experts
Andreas Schleicher, the OECD director for education and skills, emphasized that learning occurs through the mind's cognitive struggle with new materials.
It was stated that students' development is negatively affected in cases where technology eliminates the productive cognitive struggle involved in learning.
Demographic and International Distribution
The research showed that the use of artificial intelligence is more prevalent among students with advantaged backgrounds and is linked to hardware and internet access.
Usage rates varied greatly by country; more than 95 percent of students in Vietnam stated that they used AI, while this rate remained at 60 percent in Japan.
