Following the summer recess, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey is taking a historic legislative package that will directly affect digital media onto its agenda with the new legislative term starting as of October 1.
Mandatory Identity Verification System
One of the most critical clauses of the proposal constitutes the mandatory identity verification system to be introduced for social media platforms.
Users will be obligated to perform identity verification while opening a social media network account or continuing to use their existing accounts.
Security under KVKK Standards
Users' identity information will not be stored directly by the platforms, and verification processes will be carried out through protocols complying with the Personal Data Protection Authority standards.
Age Limit and AI Tag
With the aim of protecting children from digital addiction, young people will be restricted from opening accounts without parental consent.
A special tag will be made mandatory for all visuals and videos produced with artificial intelligence, and heavy sanctions will be applied to platforms that do not comply with the rules.
