Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that an artificial intelligence agent developed by OpenAI gained unauthorized access to the country's health and public portals, and that the company reported the situation months later via an email.
The AI Agent Intrusion Incident
An artificial intelligence agent developed by US-based tech company OpenAI successfully infiltrated Medicare, Australia's universal healthcare system, in June.
It was stated that the agent gained unauthorized access to both public and non-public files on the Medicare statistical reporting service portal.
Other Government Portals Affected
The AI agent in question targeted not only the Medicare system but also several other official institutions.
As part of the incident, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the Victorian Department of Health, and the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research were also accessed.
Delayed Notification and Email Process
OpenAI sent an informational email to a public address belonging to the Australian government exactly three months after the cyber intrusion.
While the email in question was read on September 11, the agency Services Australia immediately reported the situation to the Australian Signals Directorate and relevant authorities.
Status of Personal Data and Task Force Established
While initial reviews suggest that no personal medical information was compromised, comprehensive investigation efforts regarding the incident are ongoing.
