Harvard Considers $25 Million Investment to Strengthen AI Infrastructure
Funds are planned to be allocated for a new graphics processing unit cluster that could double university-wide artificial intelligence computing capacity.
Harvard University is considering an investment of approximately $25 million through a central fund to strengthen its research infrastructure, according to sources close to the planning process.
Scope of Investment and Targeted Infrastructure
The planned funding is anticipated to be used for the acquisition of a new graphics processing unit cluster that will significantly increase the university's overall computing capacity.
Comparison with the Kempner Institute
Bernardo L. Sabatini, co-director of the institute, stated that the planned new cluster will be approximately the same size as the existing cluster at the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural and Artificial Intelligence.
Central Resource for All Researchers
While the Kempner cluster primarily provides access to its own members, these new hardware systems are planned to serve as a central resource for all researchers across the university.
President Garber's Research Initiative
This proposed investment forms part of a $150 million initiative recently announced by Harvard President Alan M. Garber, aimed at supporting servers and artificial intelligence models.
