International Energy Agency President Fatih Birol evaluated the transformation in energy policies during a speech at a summit in Istanbul, highlighting the massive electricity consumption of data centers and artificial intelligence technologies.
Statements Made at the Summit
International Energy Agency (IEA) President Fatih Birol evaluated changes on the global energy map at the Istanbul Global E-Export Summit held at the Haliç Congress Center. Birol emphasized the critical importance of the Russia-Europe natural gas pipelines and the Strait of Hormuz in the energy system.
Rapid Increase in Electricity Consumption
Stating that electricity is the fastest-growing type of energy, the IEA President said that global electricity consumption is growing three times faster than total energy consumption. It was noted that the three main drivers behind this increase are artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and air conditioners.
Energy Needs of Data Centers
Birol stated that a medium-sized data center equals the electricity consumption of a city with 100,000 households, drawing attention to the decisive role of electricity supply in the competition for artificial intelligence, and noted that technology investments have surpassed oil.
