El-Sayed emphasized that a collective decision on public oversight must be made to ensure the technology is created in a way that prioritizes societal well-being rather than the interests of a select few.

Industry Debates and Resignations

Last week, the resignation of a former Anthropic researcher who claimed that rapidly advancing technology could threaten humanity created widespread repercussions in the industry.

While Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued that artificial intelligence companies should proceed with caution, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that he supports the idea of independent evaluators.

Public Trust Foundations Proposal

Within the scope of the artificial intelligence proposal he announced in June, El-Sayed advocated for turning artificial intelligence companies into public trust institutions, stating that innovation could thus be sustained safely.

It was stated that having at least fifty percent of company board members consist of democratically elected or appointed members would ensure a focus on the public interest instead of private interests.

Red Lines for Artificial Intelligence

El-Sayed noted that a public agency focusing directly on artificial intelligence safety is needed and that definitive boundaries must be established for artificial intelligence.

Rules stating that artificial intelligence must not hinder healthcare services or job opportunities, cause layoffs, or fire weapons were among those mentioned.

Call for a Pause on Research

Following the events between OpenAI and Hugging Face in July, the call for an emergency action plan was reiterated and a halt to research was requested.

It was argued that pioneering artificial intelligence research should be paused until safety is guaranteed.
