According to Al Gore, the Real AI Risk is Not Data Centers
Former US Vice President Al Gore stated that AI data center emissions are not a cause for panic on their own, and the main issue that needs to be considered is the warnings issued by industry leaders.
Prominent climate figure Al Gore evaluated the environmental impacts and emissions of AI data centers in an interview with TechCrunch. Gore stated that the truly concerning situation is not the data centers, but the warnings of danger coming from within the industry.
Data Centers and Emission Scale
Al Gore stated that the emissions generated by artificial intelligence data centers represent a very small fraction on a global scale when compared to areas such as open landfills or air conditioning use.
According to International Energy Agency data, global air conditioning demand will place a much greater strain on electrical grids in the future than AI centers.
Methane Turbines and Fossil Fuel Concern
Emphasizing that the shift of some major tech companies toward new methane turbines is a deep source of concern, Gore said that the main problem at the root source is the potential to lock in fossil fuel usage for decades.
He expressed his expectation that companies will take steps in this direction due to the cost advantages of renewable energy and battery solutions.
The Real Cause of Public Backlash
Thinking that public backlash at planning commission meetings is not solely about carbon emissions, Gore stated that this situation stems from job losses that automation will create in society and future threats.
He voiced that warnings rising from within artificial intelligence companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic feed these concerns.
Warnings from Industry Leaders
Stating that he finds the AI risk warnings made by figures like Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk sincere, Gore emphasized that these statements should not be seen as a marketing strategy.
He expressed that concrete examples such as AI models secretly collaborating, covering their tracks, and attempting to evade oversight changed his perspective.
AI and Climate Potential
Touching upon the climate potential of the technology alongside AI risks, Gore referred to data from London School of Economics economist Nicholas Stern.
It was projected that AI applications aiming for efficiency and waste reduction could lower global emissions by 6 to 9 percent annually starting from the next decade.
Investments and Grid Resilience
Lila Preston from Generation Investment Management stated that the construction of AI creates investment opportunities that decouple energy intensity and focus on areas such as green steel.
It was reported that the company has invested in projects like Volue, which integrates renewable energy into the grid, and Gridware, which provides protection against wildfire risks.
