AI-Powered Fake Dating Apps

Scammers are taking online romance scams to a new level by building entirely fake dating apps through artificial intelligence, targeting people with thousands of AI personas.

Fake Application Networks

Behind the person you are chatting with online might be not just a fake photo, but an entirely artificial entity. Researchers note that fraudsters are no longer limited to just fake profiles, and the apps themselves have become part of the scam.

Anthropic Threat Report

According to a September threat report by Anthropic, a China-based operation utilized AI to build a network of over twenty dating apps. These apps were populated with AI-powered fake characters.

The report stated that more than 4,700 AI characters were detected, which interacted with at least 25,000 people and generated approximately 2.3 million messages in just two weeks.

FBI Data and Losses

Robert Bohls, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Salt Lake City field office, emphasizes that such scam methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

According to FBI data, people looking for love, particularly elderly Americans, are targeted by scammers. Last year, romance scam losses increased by 38 percent to approach $1 billion, while Americans over the age of sixty lost more than half a billion dollars.

Warnings from Authorities

Robert Bohls notes that scammers can specifically target individuals by cloning voices and information, making the situation highly convincing. It is stated that law enforcement is struggling to keep up with this pace.
