AI debate engrosses Washington as experts warn time is running out

The dizzying pace and potential risks of artificial intelligence technologies are pitting political figures and experts against each other in Washington, while mounting resignations and new legislative bills escalate the debate.

AI Debates in Washington

Calls to bring the rapid development of artificial intelligence under control have intensified in Washington, with figures from different political views delivering similar messages on the same stage. Senator Bernie Sanders stated that the technology could threaten humanity just as much as nuclear weapons.

Speaking at the Pro-Human Assembly event organized by the Future of Life Institute, Sanders announced that he will introduce a bill that would permanently ban developments in artificial intelligence that exceed human capabilities.

Approaches of Political Figures and Leaders

Steve Bannon, meanwhile, argued that the legislative process would take too long, stating that this moment requires executive action. In contrast, President Donald Trump defended his stance on artificial intelligence and data centers, claiming it stems from U.S. leadership.

House Speaker Mike Johnson characterized warnings about artificial intelligence as an artificial crisis, emphasizing that companies can self-regulate and that the advantage against China in the technology race must not be lost.

Resignations from the Tech Sector

High-profile resignations from major tech companies due to artificial intelligence concerns continued this week. Bilal Chughtai, a research engineer at Google DeepMind, stepped down from his position because he found the pace of technological progress unsettling.

Chughtai stated that artificial intelligence carries the potential to destroy humanity and that time may be running out to avoid this scenario. Similarly, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon had also announced his departure from his position.

Legislative Initiatives and Conflicts

Although debates in Congress on how to regulate artificial intelligence are not new, public awareness has rapidly increased following these resignations. Previously, House members Ted Lieu and Nathaniel Moran had introduced bills calling for the slowing down or pausing of artificial intelligence systems.

However, Representative Ted Lieu stated that the White House is pursuing contradictory policies, noting that allowing U.S. companies to sell high-performance artificial intelligence chips to China is inconsistent with claims of competition.
