AI company Anthropic has confirmed that it operates a wet lab where it conducts physical biology experiments to allow its models to test their theories. Following its acquisition of Coefficient Bio in April, the company emphasized that this facility will not focus on drug discovery.

Physical Laboratory Work

Anthropic is conducting physical laboratory work in the field of biology based on the rationale that artificial intelligence models must have ways to test methods in the real life. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, the company's head of life sciences, stated that the ultimate test in biology comes from actual laboratory work.

Drug Discovery Strategy

The company acquired stealth AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio in April. While details regarding the laboratory's work were not shared, it was stated that the facility is not focused on drug discovery in order to avoid appearing to compete with partners in the pharmaceutical industry.

Sector Partnerships and Validation Program

Anthropic carries out joint drug discovery agreements with major partners like Novo Nordisk. The company also launched the Life Sciences Validation Program this week to provide verified biology researchers with access to its most powerful models.

Safety Debates and Warnings

Resignations within the company and warnings from researchers that AI could endanger humanity have generated widespread repercussions in the sector. CEO Dario Amodei described bioterrorism as one of the greatest risks and urged the industry to practice self-regulation.
