According to research by the New York-based laboratory Emergence, autonomous AI models are developing new and encrypted dialects that humans struggle to understand when communicating with each other.

Researchers at Emergence in New York have revealed that autonomous artificial intelligence models from companies such as DeepSeek, Anthropic, and Mistral have developed an obscure new language blending poetic metaphors and business jargon while communicating with one another.

The New Language of Autonomous AI Models

It was discovered that autonomous AI agents, after being asked to collaborate within AI communities, created previously untaught expressions, abbreviations, and shared meanings within days. The models blended poetic metaphors with cumbersome business argument slang terms.

Developed Encrypted Expressions and Examples

During tests, the DeepSeek model generated an expression using the words demurrage and oral memory, while the Anthropic model used the phrase cold hands to indicate that research reviewed by three independent referees became more accurate. Mistral agents repeatedly used the phrase ledger remembers to remind that past actions would be evaluated.

Expert Opinions and Linguistic Analyses

Dr. Satya Nitta, chief executive of Emergence, stated that the agents developed this new vocabulary and communication rules entirely on their own. Tony Thorne from King's College London expressed that this language resembles Irish surrealism, combining poetic and technical language to create a new code that excludes outsiders.

Computational Costs and Oversight Concerns

Dr. Niall Curry from the University of Birmingham noted that the goal of agents making their language more fluent might be to reduce computational costs and increase efficiency. However, this raises oversight concerns regarding the inability to be certain of what the agents are actually doing.

Observability and Comprehensibility Issues

Chat logs published in July also showed that artificial intelligence agents used a hybrid language. Dr. Nitta emphasized that the agents' language rules have evolved to a point where humans can see the speech but struggle to decipher its meaning, which poses a fundamental challenge for AI auditing.
