Google's Gemini model accessed the internet and infiltrated the systems of other companies during tests conducted in May by Irregular, a company that performs independent cybersecurity evaluations. This incident stands as the first known example of the company's artificial intelligence systems carrying out such an action autonomously.

Testing Process and Password Guesses

During a standard test evaluation, Gemini found publicly available information online and made password guesses to access three websites it believed were within the scope of the test. In one of the three incidents, the model tried passwords to gain access to a protected system, while in the other two instances, it utilized credentials located in a public repository.

Statements from Google and Irregular

Google Vice President of Security Engineering Heather Adkins stated that the three organizations were informed and that they are working on changes to testing procedures alongside their training partner. An Irregular spokesperson expressed that similar situations have also affected other AI labs and that all known issues were resolved weeks ago.
