OpenAI Board Member Warns Against Artificial Intelligence Risks
OpenAI board member Paul Christiano stated that the company and the artificial intelligence sector are not adequately mitigating the risks of loss of control.
Paul Christiano, a non-profit board member of OpenAI and a US government technology advisor, stated that the artificial intelligence industry is far from reducing the catastrophic risks of a loss of control to an acceptable level.
Risk of Loss of Control
Paul Christiano stated that the rapid acceleration in artificial intelligence capabilities carries the risk of leading to catastrophic and irreversible loss of control in the very near future.
Christiano expressed that the artificial intelligence sector in general, and OpenAI in particular, are not on the right track to mitigate this danger.
Safety and Governance
Having previously led model alignment efforts at OpenAI, Paul Christiano will join the company's non-profit foundation board and serve on the committee overseeing safety and reliability practices.
Christiano added that if OpenAI overcomes this situation, the risks could be significantly reduced.
Other Concerns in the Sector
A senior employee at Anthropic suggested that there is more than a 10 percent chance the technology could wipe out all of humanity within the next decade.
Nobel laureate computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton also shared with the public that this 10 percent probability is not an unreasonable estimate.
