OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the company will not go public in 2026, citing safety concerns in artificial intelligence technologies and critical work that needs to be done.

Not the Right Time for an IPO

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in published remarks that, in light of developments regarding AI safety, it would not be the right decision for the company to go public in 2026.

Stating that the company management does not feel any pressure on this matter, Altman emphasized that the current period constitutes a highly inauspicious timeframe for an initial public offering.

Safety and Risk Assessments

Speaking about the potential risks of artificial intelligence, Altman noted that he does not know for sure how likely scenarios threatening humanity's future are, but the risk can certainly not be ignored.

Stating that companies and governments cannot act with a profit motive, the official argued that none of such risks are acceptable and precautions must be taken accordingly.

Future Plans and Industry Cooperation

Answering questions about whether the 2026 possibility is off the table, Sam Altman stated that they have a lot of work ahead of them to fulfill security and alignment processes.

It was stated that OpenAI and other leading AI companies might be close to announcing a new agreement to slow down development speed and jointly combat safety risks.
