Google invests millions in Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to create a ‘virtual cell’

Google DeepMind, Meta, and AI drug discovery startup Isomorphic Labs are investing $300 million into the Biohub initiative to build a 'virtual cell' model to be used in combating diseases.

Virtual Cell Initiative

Google DeepMind, Meta, and Isomorphic Labs have joined forces to develop a virtual cell model that will enable researchers to combat diseases. Under this partnership, a joint funding of $300 million is being channeled into the project.

Biohub and Foundation Work

The project in question is led by Biohub, a non-profit biomedical research organization founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. Established in 2016, Biohub aims to prevent and treat diseases by creating a high-fidelity predictive model of the cell.

Comprehensive Funding

This effort forms part of a larger $1.8 billion virtual biology initiative aimed at building AI datasets that allow researchers to ask biological questions, make predictions, and receive answers in a digital environment.

Support from Public Institutions

To support the project, the U.S. Department of Energy will invest more than $500 million over the next five years. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health will contribute with datasets and knowledge bases derived from past federal investments.
