OpenAI Announces Astra for Law System for the Legal Sector
The new framework developed for law firms and legal technologies combines the GPT-6 Astra model with a dedicated search index and advanced privacy controls.
OpenAI has introduced Astra for Law, a system designed to enable law firms and legal technology companies to build artificial intelligence products and workflows around their own expertise.
Framework Tailored for the Legal Field
Announced by OpenAI, Astra for Law combines its most powerful model, GPT-6 Astra, with settings, tools, and context adapted for professional legal work.
API customers such as Harvey and Legora will be able to build applications on this new foundation, which will initially be made available to select law firms.
Comprehensive Legal Search Indexing
The system combines the GPT-6 Astra model with a search index containing over 230 million URLs, covering U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions.
The process of creating this index was carried out in part through work done with the Free Law Project.
Performance and Test Results
Tested on 200 U.S. legal research questions from Vals AI's Legal Research Bench test, the system achieved a 54 percent success rate in overall accuracy verification.
Under the same test conditions, the standard GPT-6 Astra model using only web search achieved a success rate of 38.7 percent.
Privacy and Ecosystem Integrations
OpenAI is expanding its privacy and governance infrastructure by offering law firms special controls such as Zero Data Retention on the API.
Additionally, 26 new ecosystem integrations connecting ChatGPT to tools such as Relativity, Clio, iManage, Intapp, DeepJudge, and Thomson Reuters are being rolled out.
