OpenAI has integrated the ChatGPT for Healthcare platform with Epic electronic health records. This new system allows healthcare workers to directly access authorized patient data such as appointment notes, lab results, and medication information through artificial intelligence.

Health Records Integration

The new integration can review appointment notes, lab results, medication information, and specialist records to summarize changes since the previous visit.

Instead of searching different record sections individually, healthcare workers can review a patient's past appointments and lab results via ChatGPT.

Usage Models and Access

While organizations can transfer patient information from supported EHR systems into ChatGPT, in some workflows the AI assistant can be embedded directly inside the electronic health record.

The feature has not been opened to individual accounts and is provided solely for healthcare institutions through authorized clinical workflows.

Official Health Data Sources

Alongside the Epic announcement, OpenAI announced the rollout of the Healthcare Public Data plugin.

The plugin connects ChatGPT to nine official health data sources such as PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, and DailyMed.

Safety and Accuracy Evaluations

To evaluate the clinical use of the new system, OpenAI asked physicians to review ChatGPT across 27 different use cases.

In the evaluation where a total of 4,363 responses were scored, 99.1% of the responses were deemed safe and over 93% received a good rating.
