Pentagon seeks AI to detect missile threats in seconds

Capabilities Expected from the System
The U.S. Department of Defense's Defense Innovation Unit has initiated steps to establish a dedicated artificial intelligence infrastructure capable of identifying and evaluating space and missile threats within seconds.
The requested Space Threat Intelligence Synthesis Engine aims to consolidate complex data from various sources into a single centralized hub.
Data Integration and Sources
The new software will compile live video feeds, satellite imagery, radar data, and geolocation-based information into a single, continuously updated threat picture.
The system will also process classified intelligence reports to generate actionable alerts that support human analysts.
Speed and Performance Goals
It is noted that current systems struggle to distinguish close-range objects and remain inadequate in keeping threat models up to date.
The requested new artificial intelligence software is expected to process data and present results with a maximum latency of five seconds, and ideally within two seconds.
Human Oversight and Operational Process
The system to be developed is projected to process between 20 and 30 megabytes of data per minute during normal data flows, and up to 5 gigabytes per minute during peak times.
It is stated that human oversight will continue to play a central role throughout the process, with analysts remaining either in the loop or on the loop.
