Right Livelihood Award honors women taking on autocrats, discrimination and unchecked AI

The Sweden-based Right Livelihood Foundation has honored two women and two women-led organizations fighting against autocratic regimes, discrimination, and the dangers of uncontrolled artificial intelligence.

Scope and Purpose of the Award

The Right Livelihood Foundation announced the recipients of this year's international award. The awards are presented to human rights defenders who resist systems that marginalize people.

Selected Among Nominees from 72 Countries

A total of 200 nominees from 72 different countries were put forward for this year's awards. As a result of the evaluations, the winning names and organizations were determined.

2026 Award Recipients

The recipients of the 2026 awards include Pakistani lawyer Jalila Haider, artificial intelligence researcher Timnit Gebru, a legal association from Georgia, and a women farmers network in South Africa.

History of the Award

Held annually, the international award was established in 1980 by Swedish-German philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull and has been presented to human rights defenders ever since.
