In the U.S. state of Arizona, an appeals court ruled that the showing of a video message created with artificial intelligence by the victim's family during a road rage murder trial was procedurally improper, deciding that the defendant must be resentenced.

Road Rage Incident and Legal Proceedings

Gabriel Paul Horcasitas was found guilty of shooting and killing 37-year-old Christopher Pelkey during an argument at a red light in 2021. Following a trial by a court jury, the defendant was sentenced to ten years in prison.

Use of AI Video in Court

Defense attorneys objected to the screening of a video message created with the help of artificial intelligence by the victim's family in court before the sentence was announced. The defense team took the decision to a higher court, stating that this material influenced the trial process.

Decision of the Appeals Court

The Arizona Court of Appeals announced that it reached its decision by making a fair assessment regarding the video clip in question. The court emphasized that rather than documenting a real event, the video reflected the thoughts and portrayals based on the imagination of the victim's sister.
