Internet Watch Foundation reports huge rise in AI child sexual abuse material

According to data from the Internet Watch Foundation, AI-derived illegal abuse materials detected in the first six months of 2026 have surpassed the figures for the entirety of 2025, accelerating calls for binding legal regulations.

Increase in AI Abuse Imagery

Internet Watch Foundation analysts evaluated 6,310 AI images that met the legal definition in the first half of 2026. This figure exceeded the total of more than 4,500 from the entire previous year by 40 percent.

Victim Profile and Material Types

The majority of the images examined by analysts featured girls and children between the ages of seven and thirteen. While the latest official figures released cover only static photos, it is noted that there has also been a massive explosion in videos.

Legal Regulation and Ministerial Statements

UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan stated that no options are off the table regarding new regulations. IWF Head of Policy Hannah Swirsky expressed support for binding laws that will force companies to produce safer models.

Existing Laws and Child Safety

Under UK law, producing hyper-realistic child abuse material carries a prison sentence of up to five years. The National Crime Agency and the IWF urged families not to share photographs of children on social media.
