States Leverage Artificial Intelligence for Data Security and Management
The National Association of State Chief Information Officers conference discussed how states are utilizing artificial intelligence in data management and cybersecurity processes.
At the annual conference of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers, the maturation process of state governments in utilizing rapidly evolving artificial intelligence technology for governance and security was evaluated.
Artificial Intelligence and State Technologies
Artificial intelligence technology was the prominent main topic at the National Association of State Chief Information Officers conference. The 2026 Digital States Survey, published by Center Digital Government, showed that states have gained significant maturity in their efforts to govern and benefit from this technology over the past two years.
States have moved beyond offering AI-powered productivity tools for the workforce to identifying and deploying tools to assist with cybersecurity, procurement, and application development processes.
Data Management and Artificial Intelligence
Since the early days of artificial intelligence in the public sector, leaders have recognized the link between effective data management and fully leveraging the technology's potential.
As capabilities continue to grow, states now view artificial intelligence itself as a tool to help organize data. In the Digital States Survey, more than half of the states reported evaluating artificial intelligence for data management.
Classification of Sensitive Data
Delaware Chief Information Officer Bob Osmond stated that the amount of data they hold and manage in state government is one of the challenges they face.
Osmond expressed that a large portion of this data is sensitive and highly regulated in specific ways, and that artificial intelligence can be very useful in classifying this data.
Security and Scalable Solutions
Understanding the types of data held and the level of sensitivity is a fundamental requirement for implementing the right framework and ensuring data security.
Artificial intelligence enables working with and classifying petabytes of data in a scalable manner. It helps manage retention schedules, access protocols, and provides protection against internal threats or unwanted data leaks.
